Well, I must say, this question has been plaguing me for quite some time now. Where does our right to freedom of speech really begin, and where do they really end? I was always taught that one could say whatever he or she wished as long as there were no threats on a person's life. Does this philosophy still hold true today? If so, why then is there censorship? To "protect" our young? If so, they're going to get exposed to it anyway. I can understand where profanity shouldn't be allowed, but still, the youth will still get the profanity from somewhere else. If not from the media, then it will either come from their peers or their family. So, in light of what I have just said, let me pose a new question, what is the point of censorship if there are other ways of acquiring this information? Another thing that I do not understand is why can a male nipple be shown and not a female nipple. In my opinion, that takes away from what a movie or television show is trying to convey. It breaks the mood. The same thing with male and female nudity. The director and producers and writers chose to have that material in their movies and or productions because it conveys a certain meaning, and sets the mood for that particular scene, or foreshadows something that will happen in the upcoming scenes. Also, with music, why "bleep" out all of the "profane" words in a song? I agree, some artists do go a little overboard with the profanity, but still, does a music artist no longer have "poetic free license"? What is music but poetry with instruments? What sway does society have over what is ethically right and wrong. Isn't society just humans trying to make it in the world? I believe that censorship should be cut out in all but the most extreme cases, and that society, being a group of humans, not hold such tight reign on what is deemed "acceptable" or "unacceptable". I also believe that the government should have nothing to do with censorship other than what is written in the country's constitution or law body. I encourage all of you to respond and share your thoughts with me.
